Down on Hendricks Ave, just over the train tracks and right next door to V Pizza, you will find the latest, hottest bar to hit the San Marco urban scene. It’s where you’ll find owners and long time friends Matt Carson and Kurt Rogers shakin’ up a cocktail storm and looking nothing but dapper behind their brand new bar. It’s also where you will find yourself a superior selection of local and craft brewed draught beers, select wines and spirits and of course, the finest of whiskeys. All rolled into the most casually hip and mighty welcoming taproom/cocktail lounge / beer garden you ever did see.
Matt and Kurt had spent many years working together as mixologists at Black Sheep and Orsay, before finally realizing their dream of opening their own bar together. They were not only looking forward to continuing their passion for mixing and pouring drinks, but also shared the same vision of encouraging the current growth spurt taking place throughout Jacksonville’s urban core. Kurt, having grown up in Jacksonville, has seen over time what he describes as the constant flux between the stifle growth and growth spurts of the city. Both Kurt and Matt saw an opportunity to help bring growth and flavor to the heart of Jax, so they jumped on it, and Sidecar was born. The bar is 6 weeks new and already has a solid following of regulars – some, quite in the know of Kurt and Matt’s behind the bar talents and some, impressed to see some hot new lifeblood over this part of town. Plus, the bar works cooperatively with the pizza joint next door, so you can order your Neapolitan pizza and drink your craft beer as you float happily between the two businesses. Genius.
The bar has been built with history in mind, keeping a credible 1920’s feel inside to pay homage to the pre-Hollywood era that San Marco was originally founded on. Murals by Matt’s friend Steve Arflin and branding by Grant Neilson of Black Key Designs complete the overall Sidecar look. The bar has an extensive cocktail menu ranging from the classic, well known types to the seasonal and ever changing varieties carefully and zealously created by Kurt and Matt. Let me tell you, their very own fun take of the gin fizz, playfully named Tending Rabbits and brightened up with grapefruit bitters, is one to try and personally, has me hooked. When it comes to cocktail flavor mixing and experimenting, Kurt and Matt explain that they work well together, constantly balancing each others palates out and giving honest, constructive criticism during the testing stages of each drink. It’s no secret that when it comes to a good pour, these boys have it all figured out.
