As Jax Mag’s calendar girl* and social (media) butterfly, I have to make it my business to know what’s going on around town—but more importantly, what’s worth going to. So if you’re wondering what to do over the next couple of weekends, these are the things I’ve picked from my calendar of dozens of events to be sure to attend.
The New York Times Magazine Photographs - April 26
I’ve been waiting for this new MOCA exhibit to open for over a month now. The New York Times Magazine has a reputation for great photos, and Kathy Ryan, the mag’s director of photography, is curating this exhibit. Expect to see some amazing photos, everything from celebrities and athletes to the exodus from Darfur and the Kuwaiti inferno of 1991 (above), on display through August 24. There’s a preview reception this Friday night, April 25, 6-7 PM for patrons and 7-9 PM for museum members.
Taste of St. Johns Town Center – April 26
Hanging around the Town Center is basically my life ever Saturday afternoon. This week, however, the mall is the place to be. Taste of St. Johns Town Center is a food festival with samples from Seasons 52, Cantina Laredo, Maggiano’s Little Italy, J. Alexander’s, Mitchell’s Fish Market and more, live music, entertainment and, of course, shopping. At 5 PM, battle of the bands “Talent of the Town Center” starts. If you’re a people-watcher like me, the little oasis in front of Maggiano’s should be a prime spot to take it all in.
Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Fest - May 2-4
I love shrimp. They’re delicious prepared about any way you can think of, and they’re naturally bite-sized. You can’t go wrong! So the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Fest on Fernandina Beach next weekend is a definite must-do. A parade of boats, a pirate invasion, a Miss Shrimp Festival competition, a 5k, a best beard contest and tons more fun things are going on too, but you’ll find me wherever they’re serving coconut shrimp with dipping sauce.
